News from Shelly's Visit to Tanzania in January 2007

Dear Friends of Tanzanian Orphans,

My third trip to Olasiti Village has left me at a loss for words.  The smiles of children happy to see me felt different because I am becoming a Tanzanian to them, not just a mzungu (white visitor).

What we are doing in Olasiti is valuable.  Zenan is working day and night to serve the children of Olasiti.  The center has overtaken his family’s property.  We are the only organization serving the orphans of this village.  In fact, the local government sends children in need to the coordinator – and our friend – Zenan.  He could only wish that he had the resources to assist all of those who ask for help.

What we are doing in Olasiti is tangible.  Zenan is legendary for taking in orphans he finds sleeping on his doorstep.  Three of the kids moved in and then built a makeshift room upstairs.  You can see their carpentry at left.  They sleep on the floor together.  Their “blue books” for school are hung on the walls with nails, and the back seat of an old Land Rover is their couch.   Since the hand-dug well was completed, the children pump water by stepping a mini Stairmaster.

Donated books now line the shelves.  Zenan is working on building a second classroom.

The arts club has been the shining star of the program thanks to the efforts of our special friend Theresa from Lewis and Clark College.  She sells the artwork and the children decide how to use the funds.
