News from Shelly's Visit in January 2006

While visiting Olasiti village in January 2006, Shelly sent this update:
Everything is going well here in Olasiti. There are 5 students (4 boys, 1 girl) with the orphanage who have no money to pay for secondary school.  They could also go to vocational school. There are also two girls who are on the school waiting list and may be accepted if there is room. So far I have met three of the boys.  They are very focused and interested in school.

The overall fees to attend secondary school are $210 per student/ per year.  This includes school fees, uniforms, exercise books, bicycle, etc.

I have biked the entire town and visited schools.  There were 3 to 12 orphans in every class. Zenan told them how important it was to attend school.

The first day I played soccer with at least 150 kids.  I thought maybe they just came to play, and some were not orphans.  This is not the case.  After school yesterday the orphan center was overflowing.  Porridge was served to all.  A teacher was inside with the artists and I was outside reading books.  The other kids were playing Jenga, Uno and checkers - they are a hit!

Then, we went to the garden and the kids harvested, watered and dug ditches.  Yes, it needs some fencing!  Every child walked home with a handful of lettuce.  It was a little hectic but it was nice to see who emerged as leaders.  At least 100 kids were in the gardening area.
Now I can see why they need more space and some housing.  We have looked at land to build a hostel and classroom.  More on that later....  It's a lot but worth doing.

Gotta run!
